Anti-Racism Work at Alpha
Thursday, July 23, 2020
From our Bros., Sis., and Sibs. of our founding Chapter:
In this time of deep national reflection, we Alphas believe it is crucial to address our own history as we begin to create a more inclusive and diverse future for ourselves. In order to address our role in the structures of anti-Black discrimination and violence that have been perpetuated for far too long, we have begun a few initiatives
The Alpha chapter has been meeting regularly to discuss an anti-racism syllabus, put together by members of Columbia Greek life and a Columbia post-doc fellow in the department of African-American and African diaspora studies.
We also reached out to our alumni with a fundraiser for the NYC chapters of the NAACP and Black Lives Matter. So far, we've raised nearly $2,000. Additionally, the officer corps and a few recent alums have been working to create a financial aid program to alleviate unnecessary barriers to joining our order.
This anti-racism syllabus, fundraiser, and financial aid program are the first few steps in a much larger journey the officer corps is undertaking. Going forward, we pledge to closely examine all aspects of our order in the pursuit of a more diverse and inclusive future.
